.DS_Store” is an abbreviation for “Desktop Services Store”. These files are created automatically by Apples “Finder” software (which is part of their OS).
They store information about the files within a folder, including display options of folders, such as icon positions and view settings.
It may happen that .DS_Store files inadvertently leak filenames such as database backups or private administration panels.

I recently completed my PhD in mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. My advisor was <a href="https://jpwolfson.com/">Jesse Wolfson</a>.</p>
<p>I started my doctoral research on <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0406217">high-dimensional Ramanujan expanders</a>
and their <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.07935v1">application to quantum error correction</a>.
I constructed the minimal example of such a complex and measured its quantum error-correcting properties,
using open source software that I wrote (<a href="https://github.com/adam1/golsv">GitHub</a>).
This led to another project in which I identified a framework for quantum error correction in the languages of category theory and real algebraic geometry.
I'm currently developing automated methods in quantum code discovery based on this theory.
These topics are discussed in my <a href="Adam_Marks_Thesis_v28_ss.pdf">thesis</a>.

In 2024, I was an Eddleman Quantum Institute Graduate Research Fellow, and I presented a poster at <a href="https://tqc-conference.org/">TQC</a>.

<h1>Homepage of Adam Marks</h1>
<p>I'm a PhD candidate in mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. My advisor is <a href="https://jpwolfson.com/">Jesse Wolfson</a>.</p>
<p>I started my doctoral research on <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0406217">high-dimensional Ramanujan expanders</a>
and their <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.07935v1">application to quantum error correction</a>.
I have constructed the minimal example of such a complex and measured its quantum error-correcting properties,
using open source software I wrote (<a href="https://github.com/adam1/golsv">GitHub</a>).
This research involves a compelling blend of the geometry of affine buildings, algebraic topology, group theory, and quantum computing.
I'm also interested in theoretical computer science. That project led to a side quest to identify a categorical framework for existing quantum error correcting constructions.</p>
<p>In 2023, I participated in the IPAM long program <a href="https://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/long-programs/mathematical-and-computational-challenges-in-quantum-computing/?tab=overview">Mathematical and Computational Challenges in Quantum Computing</a>.
With some collaborators from that group, I initiated construction of explicit examples of <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.13641">quantum Tanner codes</a>.
That work has stalled out, but I know how to complete it.
In 2024, I was an Eddleman Quantum Institute Graduate Research Fellow, and I presented a poster at <a href="https://tqc-conference.org/">TQC</a>.
In 2025, I am participating in the <a href="https://www.simonsfoundation.org/event/2025-mps-workshop-on-lean/">Simons Foundation MPS Workshop on Lean</a>
and eventually completing the PhD.
</p>
<p>Earlier in my career, I was a software engineer and entrepreneur. I co-founded Biba Systems, Inc., a startup that built a collaboration platform for enterprises, which was acquired by Amazon in 2015.</p>
